The bigger the dump, the better.

I got 3 x 40mm tank connectors available. (Actually they are yours  ) disconnected them from the plastic sump tank

Seriously though. the bigger the outlet, the better the surge.

A small outlet will only release water like a powerhead. A big outlet will spread better when the water disperses on impact.

we know that the bigger the better for the outlet .
But the only flapper we can find is only 40mm .
maybe that will do but i was thinking something like 60 to 80mm

If anyone knows where i can get a flapper about 60 to 80mm could you pm me

What about the toilet cistern outlets, http://www.screwfix.com/app/sfd/cat/pro.js...=81736&id=12078

A bit on the big side though.

What about guttering downpipe?

All the big pipe in the world is ok, but if the flapper is to small the flow will be to slow.We need a bigger flapper itself

Had a change of plans with the surge ,Was going to do a syphon surge
but did test on a 2" pipe and wow the water was gone out of a 15g tank in 4 to 5 seconds ish .

So might go with the flapper still .Problem is the water in that amout closes the flapper valve .What we need is a way to keep the flapper open till water has gone .
Any ideas
Remember ours is going to be larger than the one in the pic .We will be useing Food grade bins (4x 15g each 0

A bit of string tied to a float of some kind. Ping pong balls on a net.

I'm thinking of making something like this for my new tank. What level do you dump the water? into a drilled hole (how high?) or pointed at the surface? what is the total diameter of pipe for the outlets on yours jas?

Jason,

There's a design by Borneman in "Aquarium Corals" that uses a flapper tied off with a flexible line to a plastic toilet float or a boat rope float, so that the water height can be adjusted to suit prior to opening the flapper valve and dumping contents into tank.

Chris.

Hi Jas

Can I ask why you are getting yourself tied up with finding the route to get the flapper design working, the reason I ask - is that there is a very good design made by Bruce A. Carlson from the Waikiki Aquarium which doesn't use one.

If you need some info on it - I will get some info out of one of my books for you - alternatively, give Mr G a nudge as he knows of the updated design which my literature does not
include.

Hi Jas

Would like to see how it panned out - always good to see what people have had to overcome etc. Did you settle with the 40mm flapper?

I got both types running thanks to Jas

Have to say they were a pain to set up but now they're running they are quite impressive. The syphon one is alot slower in surge delivery and alot bubblier but it has no moving parts and seems totally reliable. The flapper valve ones are better but need some adjustments to start with
Big disadvantage is the noise. Fortunetley I have a remote filter room so its not a problem. In a lounge it might get annoying
