I was struggling with making the pipework on my new 4 x 2 x 2 quiet due to the pretty high flow I have. After days of messing here is what I came up with. Find an old rigid bend like the eheim ones that come with canister filters. Connect a length of hose (length varies with system) to the end and put it down the top of your open overflow pipe. Connect the other end to a longer piece of hose and simply send it down the back of the tank and into your cabinet and through the holes used for returns and wiring. You get a sucking noise through it but as its in side your cabinet you no longer hear it :)
I tried all kinds of Durso's and overflows and this beats them all hands down. My tank is now near silent and I am chuffed to bits :o

hi i have also tried a durso etc i dont get any water gurgle noise (like a sink waste) but the sound of running water through the pipes is loud does this stop all noise or just the sink drain noise? also is there any risk of a syphon if the pipe goes into the water inside the overflow?
i have a single outlet at the bottom of the tank with 1in rigid pvc pipe
can anyone else suggest a solution or has anyone tried this?
cheers john

ime the only way to stop that type of noise is to replace the rigid pipe with soft, flexy pipe. amazing difference in noise

cheers for the advice ben where do i get the pipe? i think its the piece inside the weir that causes the noise as the water drops to the 90 elbow i will try some soft pipe .
can you get it to fit tank connectors? as to re do the lot i will have to cut all the rigid coz its too close to the wall to undo
(my first mistake during set up) all i can do is hope the internal weir doesnt leak so i can remove the old pipe work.

i use black , ribbed pipe from a pond supplier. with special clamps that come with it. just cut near the tank con, leaving a few inches of pipe if possible. then slide the new soft pipe over it. the pipe comes in various sizes so you should find some to fit
