Hello there, recently set up a marine tank, followed all the retailer`s suggestions. Spent a small fortune on T8 lighting.
Then went to buy frags from 2 chap`s in Redruth. What an awakening. After a long chat we have decided that light`s are our first priority. This is were we need a little more help. We have a 5 foot 100 gallon tank. Lumenarc? :ponder:

Hi there, if your thinking of running 400watt halides (luminarcs) you may need a chiller if you've not already got one.
I run a 5 foot tank with 400w luminarcs and i needed a chiller to combat the heat problems.

From my experience (of not that long!!) it really depends on what you are going to keep in the tank! Metal halide is a must if you are keeping hard corals, T5 are ok for soft corals, if its fish only, a friend keeps his with T8's. It's a right den of iniquity thou, some people have success with things that others say 'that will never work'! No two tanks/set-ups are the same, different filtration, chemicals, additives and feeding etc etc. The guys at Jason's will give you the right advice. Hope this helps? Cheers Dave :ponder:

For your sized tank which is 2 foot deep and 5 foot long then ideally 2 x 250 10k12k14k lights will suffice, depending on how blue you like the tank to look.
400w is really only needed for deeper tanks over 24inch and for people that like to grow SPS corals from the bottom upwards which at the moment you are a long way from this yet.

Lumenarcs have the best reflector in the world and give an excellant light spread and have a cheaper running cost than makes like arcadia, plus also they kick out less heat which is ideal in the summer months.

The only drawback is they look like two upturned wheelbarrows in the front room, But if you can get over the aesthetics of this they really are the most suited light for keeping lps/sps in your tank.
And you will find most members of this board use them, If the missus likes em go for it.

If not and you prefer something more stylish with added tubes that you can change you could opt for arcadias that have intrigated t5 lights that you can change the colour of (ie blue red spectrum)
And they have built in-timers aswell but dont let that sway you.

As stated above if you intend to keep lps/sps you should be looking at 250w as this will pretty much enable you to keep any coral at most depths in the tank.

HTH a bit any more questions no matter how daft they seem fire away to your hearts content.

Cheers Tim (i met you in the shop the other day) None bald one lol.
