thanks tony, although no positive id on that site they do seem similar. so i guess in the same family, i.e hydroids.
i just hope they wont become a pest

Looks like a stinging colonial Hydroid.

Yep, looks like hydroids.
Generally considered to be a pest since they can be quite aggressive towards other corals. I have something similar in a few areas, been there for years and haven't spread so I've let them be. From what I've read they can be tough to get rid of, best solution seems to be to remove the rock and use a scraper and blow torch.

if they are spreading it must be slowly as i havnt noticed. i can remove one rock but the other has a coral on it. ill see how it goes if they look trouble ill get rid.

If it is a Hydroid ,and it looks like one they can spread and become quite a problem ,not worth the risk m8 .Have seen these in a orange colour ,if the same they will spread and can live on the side of an sps and sting it spreading ito the coral as they go
