Hi all,

New to the forum and marine in general so please excuse me if I sound a little naive! :D

I have recently bought a second hand corner tank (approx 100lts) to start as a marine tank. To increase my working volume I want to use a sump.

The corner of the tank is shown below.

Because the centre piece of glass is lower than the other sides, can I build an external weir box rather than drilling the glass itself utilising the lower piece of glass as the weir?

Any help would be great! If I can do it this way it's not impacting on the volume of the tank and also it would be kinder on the eye!

Cheers,

Chris

I used to have one too, but not a lot of space for a sump underneath. I used an overflow box as i didnt want to risk drilling my old one.

Heres a pic of the tank and sump which was 24x15x12

looking at the pic it looks like you could add an external weir box. a box made of glass would be the best thing so it could be siliconed to the tank.

you would need a bigish drain, like a 1.5mm tank connetor

Thanks Ben!

I'll take some dimensions and get some glass cut!

So the size of the weir box would have to be deep & wide enough to take the 1.5" (I take it that was what you meant) tank connector but how high (or how far down the outside of the tank) would it need to be? With a 1.5" drain there will be minimal restriction so would it just be based on the flow rate of the return pump I use?

Thanks again for all you help! :D

lol yeh i meant 1.5".

i would have the weir box about 5" high ,and whatever pump you use if its too much then you can tee off the return pipe and run it back to the sump

Here's a pic of my old Trigon still love the look of the corner tanks and quite miss it for its unique look
Mine was drilled by Jason at the back and he added a weir, This was done with livestock and half a tank of water still in it.

Couldnt agree with you more Tim. The curved glass made it look the business. Never quite got mine off the starting blocks unlike yours which looked fantastic.

Hopefully I'll be able achieve something similar to yours Tim, it looked great!

It'll obviously be on a smaller scale due to it only being a 100 ltr tank!

Thanks for everyones ideas!
