Tank direction???? I'm stuck which direction to go!

As some of you locals know i've been toying for quite a while about down sizing my tank, i've seen a cube tank at a reasonable price but it's still a fare size.
The main reason for the downsizing is the ongoing running costs have gotten to the point that they've overtaken my desposable income!

Im now unsure wether to go for a freshwater planted tank in my existing tank but i'm unsure how the running costs compare to running a reef!

What lighting would i need for a planted tank, my tank dimentions are 66"L x 30"W x 28"H also what other circulation pumps would be needed in the display and could my sump be used for filtration instead of external filters?

Cheers Andrew

seriously it would be a lot cheper imo, but i think you might struggle to go to freshwater after a colourful reef. what about fish only?

i earn sod all too m8 so if it was me i would just downsize. you have all the kit, rock , corals ect and after working out my tank runs on about £7 leccy each week i think thats totally acceptable.

selling your tank should raise enough for a smaller cube

I went round to Jerry's the other evening and saw his cube and it was nice. It was around 33"L x 33"W x 30"H and the price was okay, but it would have to be a 250 watts over it with a lot less kit than i've got on my tank otherwise i'd save no where near enough in running costs!

Is he happy with it and any idea how the running costs compare?

I don't know who much light is required over a planted tank of my size.

A planted tank is just as much of a ball ache. The one they run a maidenhead uses co2 unit, phosphate remover, ro water, mineral buffers, plant food, special substrate stuff more expensive than mineral mud, T5 lighting and allot of shrimps to eat algae and a small amount of fish as it will give you to much nitrate giving you algae all over your plants. I reckon with the new trends everyone is experimenting with DSB buckets and pappone high feed to get the cost down try a non-photosynthetic tank. Sun coral, sea fans, dendros, rics and gorgs. You can lose the light and most of the calcium stuff making it allot cheaper and just as fun to keep. These corals tend to be very colourful as well. You could have a wicked tank but keeping the challenge of the Hobie going. From what i know it will be just as expensive to keep as a planted tank plus you have all the stuff already
Life is to short for frags

andrew mate dont do it as mark said it isnt cheap this is tank i run at work

Posted Image

costing was lighting £300
substrate £240
rocks £100
substrate heating £120
plants £600
co2 £380
filters £180

thats without the fish, 100 shrimp, plant food

just go for something like bens tank, or mine we are only running 1 light i dont have any fancy gear on my tank costs £8.00 a week, if your gunna do a planted tank you cant take any short cuts just like marines the intial cost will be huge
