Hi all I have kept marines for approx 10 years and I try to keep the system as simple as possible with live rock and live sand filtration and a skimmer. My latest tank is a 36"*20"*15" bought with stand for £150 including live rock and sand which was in a very distressed state with excess hair alga growing on everything. I try to keep it as simple as possible with minimum maintenance. The tank was started with 10gallons of my friends established tank water and Deltec hang on skimmer and additional RO water. The coral stocking up to date is all tank raised stock and I am seriously interested in the online the fragging sessions to further stock the tank. As you can see I have given many softies away over the years and they have all come back as cuttings some many generations old from my friend’s tanks. I am already fragging as you can see by the fragging bowl in the centre of the tank and regularly swap frags to extend the diversity of the tank at low cost with minimal impact to wild stock. I'm still working on the system and have not decided how to complete the trim round the top of the tank although I will run an open tank as it is far easier to control temps in the summer months with the open system and the increased vap off allows more calk dosing. It shows that reef tanks can with a bit of knowledge can be run fairly cheaply and you do not have to spend thousands of pounds to have reef tank of your own. I have started many people off with tanks over the years with this very engaging hassle free way to keep a small marine tank at low cost with minimal problems.
