Has anyone come across these being used on the main display tank?

I'm wondering the same.

Interesting to see how this affects the growth on SPS corals.

Gonna swap over my 1050W of reeflux at the weekend, so I'll let you know.

You could always fry your corals with a couple of these beasties.

You can even get a 250W version which is equivalent to 1500 watts incandescent.

Well I just ordered the 125w (750w) version, seeing as it has the GES40 thread, it will fit in the bulb holder on the Lumenarc.

should be interesting, especially in a decent reflector.
Ill keep an eye out for a bright glow on the horizon.

BTW, I think they are all GES40, even the 250W version.

Yes they are, all Envirolites are ES40 or GES40

Do you need a ballast to run these? Or can you just run them from the mains? Would be good to keep us posted as i have looked allot at lighting lately and 6.5k i was considering

No, the ballast is built into the light itself.

My primary reason to swap would be to save leccy, overheating is not a problem, but after doing some fag-packet calculations, swapping out my 1050W of MH for eight 65W lamps plus a couple extra 6 foot Narva T5's would save about £4.50 a month. I'm ignoring the cost of lamp replacements for the first year or two, which would be lost in the cost of swapping over and any funds received from the sale of the existing Coralvue ballasts. Oddly, if they do run much cooler I'll probably find that the heaters will be on more, so there is a hidden cost there.

For a saving of £4.50, it's not worth it, you can make bigger savings elsewhere eg car/home insurance etc.

I remain yet to be convinced, but will follow everyones progress with interest. Make sure you get a plug-in watt meter so you can measure the consumption.

Cheers

Chris

I'm not doing this to save on electric as I want to see how this affects or improve growth rates on the SPS and LPS corals.

If it doesn't work, then it doesn't work, but if it does then good.

Cooling will be an issue with my tank especially in the summer as it will be in a south facing conservatory.

I think a frag night demo would be a good idea.
