HI again
ive got the extra/night time blue light from a suggestion from karnivor using cold cathode tubes( very cheap to run and buy).what i was thinking was are these tmc lights better than, and a good replacement for my t5s if so i will start saving. Also will they enable me to grow some different corals in the future that maybe wont grow under t5.At the moment ive got 2 white and 1 blue t5 over my tank so how many would it take to improve or replace them do you think?
cheers john h.

Hi John,
Ive got no personal experience of the TMC units, so its difficult to make an accurate judgement.
In theory, LEDS work, as youve seen. I am a little wary of the TMC ones as they are relatively low powered. If however, softies and easy to keep LPS and possibly Montipora are all you are interested in, then I would imagine they will be fine.
I would however, recommend that you consider them to be less powerful than advertised or be prepared to invest in more at a later stage.
A little bird tells me that TMC are working on a more powerful version and also Arcadia are at the design stage.
AT the end of the day, only 3 things matter.
1. how powerful are the leds
2. how good are the reflectors/lenses
3. how many does it use.
The leds are fairly decent ones, from what ive seen.
I didnt notice any lenses.
My led lights use 24 leds per linear foot and I use 2 units, so i'm running 48 leds per foot. I would say that I would need as a minimum, 36 leds per foot on a 5X2X2. this equates to 18 leds per square foot to a depth of 2 foot.
Of course that is for SPS, so LPS and softies would require considerably less. I'm not sure how many LED's the TMC strips use.
It might be worth doing a google search to see what it brings up.
Heres a link to another forum with someone using them. I hope its ok to post links to other forums, if not, mods please remove and accept my apologies.
