what ph are you getting without adding buffer? usually its better to have it low and stable rather than keep trying to buffer it up

Have you looked at your system to see what could be causing your low ph, sometimes it can be a simple fix such at poor gas exchange at the surface. This can be rectified by pointing a powerhead towards the tanks surface untill you get better surface agitation!

I never let it drop below 7.9, I usually buffer before it gets to 8,00 usually about 2 table spoons a week. The tank a Trigon 350 has been established for about 3 years, the system holds 100 gallons including the sump and is mixed coral softs, sps and lps it has 4 large fish emperor angle yellow sailfin tang maroon clown and a coral beauty. I've got to the stage where I need a calcium reactor which is in the garage waiting to go in, cant get calcium over 400 anymore, that may cause ph problems in it self. This is why I asked the question, I've just paid £12.74 for 500g seachem buffer and it doesn't go that far. Im going to try cutting down the amount I put in because it should only push the ph up to around 8.3 however much you use.
Cheers
