hi all i have a green favia that has started to die back fron the edges it looks healthy and puffs up etc but it seems to be receeding all the way around the edge leaving nothing but bare rock. The white marks in the first pic isnt dust or sand but seem to be as far as the die off has gone.
Any ideas????? sorry pics are blurred but you can see how much has gone over a short time all params are good and all other corals are doing fine.

Is it possible to get all your parameters readings? Do you ever feed your favia? If so what with? When it expands do you see feeding tentacles or at night?

It might be worth feeding with some small bits of shell fish chopped up or some brine shrimp. How long as your tank been running? Do any of your fish harass the coral? It might be worth putting a clear plastic bottle with the bottom cut off when feed in the coral so fish can't get to the food and the flow doesn't blow it away. You might find the coral is just hungry?

How much lighting and what is the depth of the tank? It should be low to medium flow and medium light. I would say maybe its OK has the colour dulled and faded since you got it?

No the strange thing is there are no signs of change ...colour is ok and it puffs up and ripples in the flow if you look across it.it is just receeding from the edges.
have moved it away from cleaner shrimps area today and fed coral food direct via syringe and cut down bottle.

hi davewell what was left did!
after discussing it with linds he said it was likely to be an infection caused by the cyano outbreak i had and the ony thing to do was cut it right back to the clean bit at the centre. So out came the hammer and chissel and i carefuly took of about 1 inch all round which left me with a piece the size of a £2 coin.I then moved it to a higher flow area up off the sand and away from the worst of the cyano. So far it seems to be ok and in the last few days with the new lights i think it has started to spread a little so figers crossed its survived.A quick question ....when/if it reaches the edge of the little bit of rock its on do i just milliput it to a larger peice to get a bigger colony?
cheers john h.

Nice one always good to hear success stories. I'm not too sure about whether it needs a bigger rock to grow on as I would think as it grows it should build new skeleton anyway.

I'm sure someone else can confirm what to do.
