In my house I have a lamp. I can put, 40w, 60w or 100w light bulbs in it.
On my tank I have 150w MH. Can I put 250w bulbs in it or am I looking at this too simply? If so can I upgrade my unit easily or do I need a whole new unit?

You need a whole new unit as there is a ballast that runs the bulb where as in your light there isn't. You could try using an energy saving light bulb as talked about on here.
