Does anybody just use these two in the tank , Am thinking of just dosing a few products to bring down nutrients not looking to go the whole hog
Cheers

I've often thought of using some to boost the bacteria diversity. With an eight/nine year old tank I was a wondering if it may have, not a mono-culture of bacteria, but a lower diversity.

I think people looking for a ULNS "light" option tend to first go with the Prodibio range of bacteria (Biodigest) and vitamin/amino acid supplement (Bioptim) which is pretty cheap and simple to implement. It doesn't include an additional food (carbon) source or zeolith media, which is why it seems to be slower acting than the Zeo or Fauna Marin options - they say it can take 3 months or more before you start seeing a real difference. My personal experience backs that up - I started dosing Prodibio digest and bioptim toward the end of my first biotope system and it was about 3-4months in before I could point to obvious improvements. While most of the corals were already colourful there were a couple that had remained stubbornly dull, e.g. a rusty brown pocillopora verrucosa. But at that 3 month mark it finally started to turn the proper shade of pink.
If after this you then decide to take ULNS a little further there are still option in between this and a full-blown zeolith system, e.g. just adding a carbon source (say ZeoStart2) to your existing Probidio regime at first, before then adding zeoliths as you get sucked fully into the dark side

Good post jacksok
Did post a link to the Prodibio range of bacteria (Biodigest) and its good to find a guy who uses it .
I myself if i were going down any ULNS or bacteria boosting i would use the Biodigest and who knows i may well do this in my new system
Any more info on this would be much appreciated

At last - Someone willing to spill the beans on using ULNS on this forum. I knew there was one out of 668 members that must be using it. Call me cynical but I was beginning to think the forum was used just for buying frags and selling things!
Thanks Jacksok

Yep nice clear post. With so many of those products in the ULNS type ranges, it's confusing as to what does what, what combinations they can be used in etc. The ones mentioned above seem pretty simple and safe to try out and evaluate over a few months.

Apologies, only just noticed these posts.
Not a great deal I can add on the Prodibio system - it really is very simple and comparatively cheap to implement. The system I was running at the time had a DSB and cheato in the sump. Cheato continued to grow unlike in full-blown ULNS systems where you'd expect it wither away. So its nothing like as agressive as the FM or Zeo systems, more a Lower NS than ULNS. And in a ULNS you'd be expected to remove the DSB as this would be running in competition with the zeolith media. So Prodibio seems ideal as an add-on to existing set-ups where people don't want to make fundamental changes.
Two words of warning though:
- the glass vials are a complete menace - cut myself more than once
- be prepared for potassium levels to drop - this caught me by surprise as I'd never experienced or heard of it before, let alone tested for it. Couldn't understand why, after initial improvements, my montis began to loose colour and fade and was pulling my hair out before I stumbled across this.
