Hi guys
My tank has had a problem for a couple of weeks now with Cyano. Phosphates, nitrates are where they should be. I reduced the lighting time over the tank, reduced feeding, there is also good water flow. I hoover it up off the sand bed, but it seems to come back the very next day. I run a good skimmer in the aqua-medic turboflotor. It's getting to the point now were it's starting to look un-sightly, and is starting to cheese me off. The lad in the LFS said it might be worthwhile changing my halide bulbs, but they are only 8mths old, could they be knackered after that length of time? Is there any type of medication that is safe to use? Any help or advice would be appreciated.
cheers
Brian

don think about medication just yet. it can be a gamble.
your lighting could be to blame as although 8 months isnt VERY old it is about the time that some people will change them. i guess it could depend on the brand.
however id wait to get some other opinions

Brian,
I can sympathise ive just got clear of the stuff after a 3 week battle.
This is what i did.
1. Moved the flow around and increased it by 5000lph to cover any dead spots.
2. Check your Sump for any problems, my flow was being restricted by the Cheato that was multiplying too fast and it was trapping scum on the surface.
3. My parameters were all good like yours except the salinity which i discovered was creeping upto about 1.0275 ( TOP TIP calibrate your refractometer regularly). So i did several 80 litre water changes over two weeks and lowered the salinity to 1.025. I hoovered up all the excess of the gravel, stirred it up and waited.
After a couple of days the cyano that had returned started to float off the gravel in the evenings and did not come back, same with the stuff on the LR. With a little more help from me i managed to waft off even more. Now all i have is a little, but thats in places hard to reach with a scraper so im keeping up the water changes.
Hope this helps i was feeling pretty down like yourself but perservere its worth it.
Good luck
Rocky.

The good thing is that it can be beaten. I'll have a go at what you did, and take it from there. I suppose it's a matter of finding what the cause of it is, and keeping on top off it.
cheers
Brian
