I've been using a mix of 900ml ethanol (vodka), 100ml acetic acid (distilled vinegar), and 60grams of glucose. But I'm now switching over to a proprietory carbon source as I am now able to get it at trade. But if anyone wants to experiment with this home-made mix I have a few litres of it left. Rather than pour it down the drain I'll send it on for free if people will pay for postage & packing - which I estimate woould be £3 for 900ml. So if anyone wants to play with this stuff drop me a pm and we'll take it from there.
Regards,
Keith

Decided to dose 0.8 ml one day
Quarter of a teaspoon the other
and 0.4ml of Vinegar the next in rotation.
Current nitrate levels are 20ppm. On a 200g system give or take some through rock dispersion
Will get some pics of coral that hopefully will start to look better over time. So far my skim mate has turned much blacker already even on
a wet skim, Upgrading the Pump soon to cope with the extra demand through excess or dead bacteria.
If this method of keeping a tank in check doesn't live up to its rep,, I'm going to go down the ULNS.

The principle is sound - KZ recommend dividing up the dosing of their carbon source to reduce the peaks and troughs you'd get with simple single daily dosing.
Some people effectively do this without realising anyway - they add acetic acid (distilled vinegar), a carbon source, to their top-up water which is fed through a kalkwasser stirrer so as to boost the calcium output, little appreciating that they are in the process also feeding the bacterial population.
My only concern with all this would be that in practice the evaporation rate would vary day to day - humid days/hot days/cold days, etc.

Well, my evaporation is quite constant and a tank full of top up water lasts me 6 days, week on week. I suppose it may vary slightly from day to day but not by much. it might be worth giving your recipe a go if you still have some sitting around.

My skimmate is also alot darker when using vodka. It gets a realy dark brown/green colour and it stinks!
