HI, ive had one of the above fish for about 2 weeks now, but getting him to feed is becoming a concern. Ive tried mysis, which is what my LFS was feeding him, also my own home made food still nothing, ive tried feeding after light out as i read that they like to feed at night. The only other food i would like to try are silver sides, but im having a big problem finding any in the uk. Do any of you guys know where i might get some? I live in a coastal town and all the wet fish shops in the town have never heared of them. Is there another type of fish that i can easily get hold of that he might like to eat?

thanks in advance

Silversides are a freshwater species, how about a fishing tackle shop? Have you asked them if they have or can get them?

I dont have the dwarf lion .. But the antenetta which is still fairly small ... Anyhow mine wont touch mysis, But he really likes Pacific Krill which you can buy in packs, Asoon as it goes in he comes flying up.

If you live in a coastal town you should be surrounded by natural food for him.Get to a harbour and you should find shrimps and prawns.Rockpools for more shrimps, prawns and gobies.Estuaries should be packed with mysis, sand shrimp and all of the others i just mentioned.Just take small net a have look!
You could also try waving small fish or shrimp infront of him with tonges or tweezers.

Thanks everyone for your help.

Slappy, i havnt tried a fishing tackle shop for the silversides didnt know they were FW....Doh. Will give them a try later.

Cass1, Where do you get the lance fish from? Think he might like them.

Dylan, Again i wouldnt know where to get live brine shrimp from, i was thinking more along the lines of frozen so its easier to keep.

Thanks again.

What size is the fuzzy m8,

Small then usually Piscene energetics frozen mysis is reliable for eliciting a feeding response

Larger ones tend to take well to frozen small sandeels (sally's brand i normally use from TMC) if stick fed for a few weeks.

You should be able to get him eating new era flake once you have got him feeding on the basics.

Hes about borderline then, so try him on bits of the fish and PE mysis, one will elicit a feeding response, dont worry if it takes another week or two. Either make a feeding stick of your own with a thin cane (untreated) and a bit of steel wire or buy a clear plastic one if you can find one. it is simply then a case of pestering him with a piece of the fish until he gets angry enough to eat it. If lionfish see something small enough as a threat to them they will usually attack it. Persevere with it, as eventually the fish will get angry enough and nail the food. This method of harassing the fish works particularly well for fu man chu and antennata lions IME!

Sandeel is quite tough so it doesnt break apart easily causing unneccesary pollution, quite attractive and nutritious, typically the sallys stuff is loaded with calanoid copepods which makes it even better. If you have it available, try using some TMC lipovit on it too as it contains vitamin B12 which is an appetite stimulant (i use this on baby bamboo sharks including a group that had a severe infection that needed oral antibiotics when i arrived in KSA). Do this and the first one or two difficult feeds will usually prove to be the only difficult feeds!

PE mysis is good quality whole large mysis, normally smaller fuzzys, which are usually hearty feeders will eat this after a couple of feeds with little coaxing. If yours proves to be very difficult then opt for the above method, again the lipovit may be an idea!

Like i say persevere with him, he'll learn, hes not going to starve for another few weeks yet that B12 will help if your having to repeatedly do this!

They sometimes go off their food if they are shedding, which happens periodically but can also be a sign of problems

Is he eating yet?

He has started eating the frozen mysis, but i have noticed that he is shedding, and losing all his markings. You said this is normal, but can also be a sign of a problem. What problems could this indicate?

thanks

Typically skin parasites, or lack of vitamins

If he has started eating something try working him onto other foods, especially fish based ones and enrich these which will help deal with both problems, if he wont eat anything else (keep pestering) make sure the mysis is enriched and work on that as best as possible

FWIW I feed my Fu Manchu Lionfish with live estuary/river shrimp from the LFS.

I just buy a bagful once a week and tip them in. The lionfish, and the anglerfish, then have a week to hunt them down before the next batch go in....

Of course this only works if the other tank mates are compatible to this approach - e.g. if there was a triggerfish in there these ambush feeders wouldn't get a look in and would starve.
