Quick update on my lighting.

Looked at Marcus' lights and decided that it was the way to go.

I'm now running 2 x 400W 10K for 7.5 hours, followed by 2 x 250W 20K for 3.5 hours.

Not running them all at the same time!

I'm deffinately liking the spread of light from the reflectors, and they fit over the tank perfectly.

I have braced the refectors together with some right-angle alluminium, and used threadded bar to keep the bulbs from drooping.

I will update soon with pictures of the tank under the different bulbs.

Quick pic of the reflectors

Sadly tank was shut down back in May as the dreaded Phosphates were too high and stock was suffering.

The tank remained full of water and a couple of fish (just couldn't manage to catch them!).

With Phosphate readings in the region of 0.3 (yes 0.3 not 0.03!) and Nitrates up around 50 mg/l it was time to seriously re-think the way I have been reef keeping............

Enter the "Gyractor".... after removing the stock, and the Phos reactor, I plumbed in the Gyractor and loaded it up with around half the media it ships with (125ml).

Now after 2 months of keeping just 5 fish, a clam, 2 Tuxedo urchins and a couple of Red leg hermit my readings are now down to almost undetectable for both Phos and Nitrate.

I have to say that I was not in favour of using these little plastic beads, but must admit they work particularly well.

And Tony your Gyractor is a great piece of kit!

Time to start again with a blank canvas!

Here are a few pics to be going on with…..

Quick update, been trying out the idea of "NO ROCK" after long (and sometimes interresting) chats with Lindsay and Jas :sign_lol:

Built a framework and drilled a few holes for pespex pegs.

Bunged it in the tak,

Bought some frags,

Posted Image

Put some frags on the pegs,

Posted Image

Waited a bit and watched them grow,

Posted Image

Slowly getting there, but got a while to go yet.

Corals are now starting to grow onto the plastic and I've added more zoas to the base of the pipework.

Bio Pearls seem to be handling it so far without any rise in Phosphate or Nitrates.

Feeding 2 scoops of CV every other day, going to up it to 1 and a half every day and see how it goes.

The corals look to be doing well Trev,is that an efflo in the bottom picture showing blue growth tips?.A reef tank run on pearls or pellets as part of the filtration has become a popular process over the last year or so but a reef tank run on pearls or pellets without any rock in the system may well raise a question or two for many.
What fish do you have in the tank?and will you be adding more?.
Keep the updates coming Trev.

This is looking really nice now, a few more months of growth and this will look really natural. Would love to see it in the flesh some time and I'm really hoping to meet some of you guys at jasons one day.
How's your lyre tail settling in, is he gonna get any girls with him?
I can't wait to get my pipes in when it's cured.

Lyre tail is on his own for the time being, don't want to push the bio-load too much.

Thanks for the kind comments, hoping to get this tank past the 2 year point, fingers crossed.

The tanks looking good m8,great growth and colour, talking of colour it still amazes me how colourful the corals were while running the tank before the strip down when you had very high nitrates and phosphates,i know it stunted the growth when the levels became high but the colours hung in there.

Looking really good there Trev. A real credit to all the effort you put in. When I first heard about using plastic I thought it wouldn't look that nice, but yours is looking really good. Anymore updates on this?

Tank is looking good and you're getting great growth - guess the sps are enjoying all that flow. Have you any live rock at all (in the sump)? Doing away with live rock is a great way of making sure no nasties get into the tank especially apstasias which is my pet hate! How did you stabilise the pipe work and is it standing up to the weight of the corals? It's a really interesting idea and look forward to seeing it grow out. :good:

Thanks for the kind comments.

The pipe work has a small amount of sand in it, which helped to secure it whilst the corals took hold.

There is absolutely no rock in the system at all.

I'm struggling with nudis at the moment, they always seem to like the brighter coloured montis :threatenlumber:

Will update the pics in a week or so......

Looks good Trev, the corals are hiding the pipe work well as they grow, its possible one or two of the corals may need to be cut back in time to create more space for some of the slower growers?.
