hi all
ive commited the sin of buying something coz it looked nice before i reserched it :unknow: well 2 things actualy i got a blue polyped gorgonia ( Guaiagorgia i think)and a red chili coral both i now know need feeding and are not easy to keep.
the gorgonia does open but has algea clumping on some of it and the chili opens and feeds but im worried that in time it will suffer.so what do i do? altough its ultimately my fault i know but the lfs who sold them didnt tell me this when i asked how easy they were to keep do any of you have or have had these? and am i worrying about nothing?
cheers john h.

Hi

Chilli corals are ok as long as you give them a couple of squirts a day with something like TMC nutra plus, the gorgonia may prove to be more difficult, regular feeds with the same and placing it in the direct flow of a return from a refugium offers the best chance of success. both will benefit from a bi weekly stirring of a sand bed provided its fairly shallow

Make sure that you pluck off any algae you see on the gorgonia as this could lead to its demise in its probable weakened state

Like i say to all ,you have my and lindsay's number so feel free if in your LFS to call us if not sure about a coral .

The gorgs can be hard to keep and the blue polyped are on the list of no gos for me and Lindsay unless the come through by mistake .

The Chili coral maybe ok if you keep it in some shade as to not let algae grow on it .Feeds mostly at night and looks lovely when fully polyped up .We have kept chili corals ok with no problems and no special feeding is needed if you feed the tank well a few times a week after lights gone out

IMO Be carefull if messing with the sandbed as this can start of cyano on the sand

just a follow up on the gorg!
i rang the lfs who sold it and explained what has happened and what ive been told buy you lot and to their credit they took it back without question and let me choose something else to the value.so hats off to them. The guy who sold it to me also said he was going to look into the long term survival of these corals so hopefully they will stop selling them too.
cheers john.

unusual and fantastic result

I dont think they should be taken away from the trade totally, but certainly vetting, a bit more knowlege and a 'to order' basis is a much better attitude towards the sale of these animals
