Hi, Does anyone round here (northcornwall) sell calcium hydroxide?, looking for between 500gr to a kilo.

On a similar vein are many people using it in their own tanks

cheers for any advice or info

Calcium hydroxide or kalkwasser as our european friends refer to it is a useful alternative to two-part supplements or calcium reactors. It's different from things like calcium chloride in that it increases alkalinity as well as calcium levels. But there is a downside... (the attached is an extract from a non-sponsor site)

Quote

Kalkwasser or limewater should only be used by experienced aquarists. We say this first because the ingredient (calcium hydroxide) is caustic, second its preparation is more involved, and third because it can raise the pH in the aquarium to dangerous levels if not used properly. So given these drawbacks why would anyone want to use it? Because Kalkwasser is a balanced additive that can increase both calcium and carbonate alkalinity levels in the aquarium in the appropriate proportions, plus it's comparatively cheap - 900 grams will produce around 600 litres of saturated kalkwasser solution!

Dosing: 1 litre of saturated solution added to 100 litres of aquarium water should raise calcium levels by around 9ppm, and alkalinity by around 1.1 dKH

By far the eaasiest way to use this stuff is with a kalkwasser stirrer. Deltec and AquaMedic do versions of these - both are effective IME. HTH
