Well, I picked up my Moorish Idol from Jason's place today, where Lyndsay has been settling it in for the past 10 days.
I must admit, a very nervous moment for me but ive acclimatised it and its settling down in its new home. The yellow tang is giving it a bit of harrassment at the moment but its restricted itself to flashing and there are no signs of injuries.
The Moorish doesnt seem all that bothered by the Tang and just gives him a wide berth but carries on with his own business.
Ive already put 3 feeds in, made up of Mysis, mixed with a little of my own food, to hopefully get it used to the smell and taste. It hasnt put him off the mysis, but he is leaving anything else alone at the moment.

He's a little thinner than I would like him to be, so Ill concentrate on trying to get some protiens into him. He is piocking at the rocks and there is lots for him to find, so hopefully, the next few days should see quite a difference.

Anyways, enough talking, here's a shot of him.

Just try and feed him every time you look at the tank, little and often is the key to start with.If you can get live mysis they normaly gorge on it so its worth the effort.Mine used to also like pellet and flake but be sure to soak the pellet for a while so its nice and soft/swidgey because most fish hate hard dry pellets to start with.
Good luck and keep us posted!

Oh god, I can see it now....you haven't got any clowns, sorry, nemo's have you? Better keep an eye on Gill in case he tries to spring nemo from the tank.

Sorry, couldn't resist it. Beautiful fish by the way.

I dont think they are renouned for SPS munching, but may take zoas and polyps, either of which I'd be happy to see him lay into atm. I have loads of yellow polyps and he can have the lot if he wants.

A quick update.

Well, its still the right way up. Its grazing constantly on the rocks although I doubt there will be enough to sustain such a large fish. Its still showing no interest in prepared foods and a declining interest in Mysis, which I think is largly due to its preference for grazing. Ive tried a number of different foods without success but will keep offering a variety in the hope of getting it on to one of them.

Its early days, but there are no signs of it bulking up, so I still remain slightly concerned.

The shows of strength from the yellow tang has now largly stopped, with just the odd flash coming from it, whioch doesnt seem to concern the idol.
It has made no real associations with any other fish, which I would like, as I think it would help to get it onto prepared foods.

I will conitnue to monitor things and if necessary, the QT is still an option but will of course remove his grazing opportunities.

Have you tried softening pellets and molding them onto a small piece of live rock? Also as i say live mysis is an almost dead cert.

Yep, i'm already doing that and ive also got some jellied food that I made, that I can attach to his favourite grazing place.
Weather permitting, I may go down to the shore during low tide and see if I can find some Gammarus under rocks.

Did you worm him?

Just persevere with him, if hes been feeding and isnt getting stressed or pestered he will be fine and soon start eating

No, not yet, I have a QT waiting and wormer but have avoided the extra stress it may cause. I will monitor him for a few days and if there is no obvious sign of improvement, I will isolate him and worm him. I'm concerned not to take him away from the only food he is taking, which is to graze the live rock.

He is getting the odd show of strength from the Yellow tang but he isnt particularly bothered about it. At worst, he just turns away and quickly returns to whatever he was doing. He utilises the entire tank and isnt pinned at one end. I'm just hoping hes finding enough on the rocks ATM. Ive observed him for some time and cant really pinpoint what hes eating. I also bought a few packs of live fortified brine shrimp today but i'm stuggling to get him to take any before the rest of the fish woosh em down. I did feed the others up first but the brineshrimp are too big a temptation for them.

Any advice would be very welcome.

I was thinking about the worming today Tony,he was eating mysis here after a few days and if thats still the case it may be a good time to worm him in that spare tank you have.
