SMD = Surface mounted device..
basically, they are much smaller devises designed to be flow soldered onto a circuit board. Many devises are available as standard and SMD.
One word of caution though. SMD's and particularly LED's have to be soldered under very strict tolerances as you can easily fry them with a soldering iron unless you are an expert solderer.

the thing is i bought some regular led bulbs for my edge tank and they have dimmed and gotten brown already, so i was going to try these
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/2x-MR11-12-SMD-LED-1...=item20af3ad4bb
they also say they have a larger spread too.
are they safe in a damp enviroment?

Been there, Done that.........waste of time. Overhyped and underpowered. I now have a power compact in mine, works great.
This isnt for marine by any chance?

take a look at these. Ive been toying with this idea for a while. If you wanted a good marine light for an edge, these would be perfect. You can even choose what temperature you want the bulb. A 12v 5A laptop power supply should run one fine.
You would need to cover the bulb with a glass test tube though.
Replacement bulbs are cheap and should last 12 months.
halides for an Edge (or any or micro reef).
