Hi guys, Tank upgrade is virtually complete - new sumped 5 footer is running- (ocean free drilled with 2 overflow pipes), some of my old sand is in the sump, new sand in display tank - lr from old tank moved in, 25kg of really nice mature rock from lfs in as well.

skimmer mce600 moved over, New water (DD). Circulation pump suspended in sump - that makes it silent!! :)

Not too many hicups................turned off pump while setting up and mixing the salt & water, nipped out to get a couple of pipe fittings and syphoned 75 litres back through the pump, over flowed the sump :o :o - thank goodness we rent :D :D haha. (floor is concrete and carpet was trago!!!!!)

Now the pump inlet is installed properly !! so that it is angled just below the surface and it only pulls just over an inch off the level if pump cuts out (tested it and sump could take the extra volume)

Had to move stock over as old tank had no rock, no skimmer and not enough light as most of the new lights were on the new tank. Stock move seems fine so far - some coral sulking but practically all lps are extenting, gorgs are out, leather sulking but extenting polyps about 50% of the time. Ricordias, hairy mushie all fine. Fish happy - copperband just carried on picking at lr as if nothing happened - one clown went down the overflow pipe so screened that properly.

I dosed some bacteria 'food' etc and am taking feeding very much (tiny pinch of new era flake) on the lean side so not too much waste is produced as the filters re-establish.

This is my first sumped set up and I'm about to set up an auto top up to run with a dd kalc stirrer - where is the best place to put the sensors please? =- sump or main tank? and i think its best to only add kalc at night but it also says to drip it in slowly - if the top up is on a timer wont it add all the top up water in one go rather than slowly?

All advice will be gratefully recieved, thanks , Marcus

with a sump system the only place the water level will change is in the sump, and the area of the sump the level changes depends on the design you have.

can you post up a diagram of how the baffles are fitted?

not the best diagram !! haha but visiting my mum and cant take a picture of the sump today.

all sponge removed, 2 1 inch pipes feed into right hand chamber, deltec skimmer sat in same chamber, kalc stirrer and ro supply to right with kalk water feeding into chamber after skimmer - Algae, sand, etc next 2 chambers, last chamber on left has pump i it - the pump chamber and one next to it stay the same level so is it either of these that could house the auto top up sensor as the other chambers are kept the same level by baffle plates
