Hi all

Am ready for new lamps, I currently use the BLV 250w 14K lamps, but was thinking of going for the 10K. What changes would I expect to see from going from 14k to 10k, ie: Coral growth, colour etc. The tank is mainly sps, and is 4x2x2.

cheers
Brian

hi brian
have run blv 10k in the past and now run 14k blv.youll probably notice increased coral growth but overall tank colour will be yellower but brighter, with corals tending to appear less colourful.my current thoughts are to use hqi type ballasts which overdrive lamps so enabling the 14k/20k type lamps to be used giving out acceptable levels of par whilst burning with a crisp white light.i will at some point try the radium 20k lamps have seen them used to good effect on sps based systems and when overdriven give a pleasant output, with reasonable par.

as above really. although i had 14k and changed to 10k ,when i had halides, and much prefered the brighter look of the 10k. imo you still get nice enough colour from the corals.

can you suppliment the halides with blue t5's?

If you supplement the 10k halides with atinic t5 that will make the corals flouresce and appear more colorful.

Thanks for that lads. I currently have the Giesemann infiniti, and have 2 actnic + T5's and 2 aquablue plus T5's. The aquablue+ are a 60/40 white/blue mix, are these okay, or would I need to have 4 actnics + to supplement the 10k bulbs.

I have run BLV 10K as my last two sets of lamps and like them. I decided this time though to put a 10k at each end and a 14k in the middle, due to the light merging you can't really notice a massive difference but I do prefer the look. I do also have 2 d-d t5 pure actinic.

If it was me I would go with the 10k and stick a couple of pure actinic and maybe a couple of kz fiji purple

Cheers Matt

Always wanted to try the Fiji T5's, might have a dabble with them.
