Hi guys, need some info please. I am moving my tank into a room divider position and was going to make a new stand for it. Just looking to see if this will be ok or if it needs modifying? Any thought will be appreciated
All timber will be 4x2 and 2x2 with 18mm ply for the top then skinned with 10mm ply all the way round

Thanks

Should be ok ,,Ben made mine with the diagonals and there were no give in any direction .Makes for a well strong stand and not to expensive to build

Unfortunately for Ben, his diagonals are so poorly cut that they add virtually no benefit at all :D

Rather than use diagonals, if you glue and screw the side and rear ply panels then that will add all the rigidity you need. It will also help dramatically if you glue and screw all your joints. The only other bit I would add is a cross-rail running front-to-back half way along under the top, again glued and screwed.

Thanks for that Chris, was going to glue and screw it all and might do away with the diagonals as it is going to be skinned with 10mm ply and i forgot to draw a cross rail on the pic but one will be added lol

PS will also need a willing reefer to lend me a chop saw so i cant cut the timber straight :)

Actually you want to cut the timber straight, that's what a chop saw is for. :blz:

B&Q or Wickes were as cheap or cheaper than the saw mils when I got mine.

Make sure you get the planed stuff, it won't be 4x2 but near enough. Don't try and be cheap and get the sawn timber as it's not square and you'll end up with a spare workbench, like me!

Wickes do studwork timber which is cheap and fine for a 4 or 5 foot tank.

89mmx38mmx 2.4m £3.08
63mmx38mmx 2.4m £2.14

Not for all of it.

You could make your corner uprights from 1 piece of 89x38 and 1 piece of 63x38, but all the rest should be 89x38. And make sure you glue and screw it all. The end panels really don't need to be more the 6mm ply, mine aren't, especially if you glue them, but the back one would be good to be thicker.

I didn't mention this before but if it was me, I would make the uprights go down to the floor rather than rest on a bottom rail.

And make sure you place the timbers on their edges not flats, it not like bens photo.
