Seriously, its hard to virtually impossible to recommend an exact amount. Id just keep adding a variety in small numbers until your on the winning side then let nature take its course!

Different critters suit different algaes, what sort are you struggling with? A few simple photos might help. Then you need to work out why you are getting the algae, ie where is the nutrient coming from and why isn't it being taken out. My 600 litre tank has maybe 8 to 10 hermits, no more than 3 or 4 snails a sandsifting starfish and a serpent star. There are probably a load of other critters I'm not even aware of.

Chris hit the nail on the head there ,,work out why you have the algae in the first place .Its all well and good adding critters ,snails ,starfish, hermits and so on but your run into other issues .
If you have a tank with a ton of critters and you do get the issue with the algae sorted the critters will starve ,and not to mention what a heap of hermits may do to your snail population
Have a small critter crew and keep algae at bay with lower organics for the Algae to feed on is my advice m8
