A certain moderator on another popular reef keeping forum has told me I cannot post anymore environmental threads. He has freely admited he has deleted threads that he has not even looked at. I started one about Sea Shepherd releasing 900 juvenile blue fin tuna that had been caught illegaly in the med. There was about 7 of us discussing that and overfishing in general. Next day it was gone. he said I had already been warned blah blah.

So the mod and I have been having discussions via PM.

This is where i get to the point of the thread.

He said it's fine for me to talk about reefkeeping and diving but not the environment. I said I can't see how he thinks the environment couldn't ever be brought into discussions, they are all linked very closeley.

This morning I log on and he has given me some links that I have posted over the last 6 months, saying these are no way linked to reef keeping and diving They had all expired apart from one. It was a Greenpeace campaign to save the orang utan in Indonesia.

So I gave said mod a simple lesson in ecology.

The campaign is to save Indonesias remaining forests. This will save the Oran utan from extinction and all the other million of plant and animal species.

So I pointed out to him the direct link to reefs and scuba diving.

Deforestation accounts for 25% of mans co2 emmisions. Anthropogenic co2 is warming earth and it's oceans, causing corals bleaching. Another massive factor is that the oceans have reached their limit to absorbing the additional co2 from mans activities, ph is dropping, this is inhibiting calcification, having bad effects to corals, molluscs, plankton etc.

Then there is sedimentation. When forests are clear felled there are no trees to hold the shallow tropical soils, so they wash into streams and rivers into the sea. Covering and killing corals. These sediments also bring nutrients, causing eutrophicication, eventually algae takes over the coral.

Indonesia has more coral reef than any other country in the world and it also has the most bio diverse.

Worth protecting as a reef keeper and a diver. Yes or No?

Yes Ross, its all important everything is linked and until we see this and try and restore the balance (bit like alk, calcium and magnesium for the marine link) we will see death and destruction.

Personally i cant see a problem with the topics, cant they just go in the general discussion part? I am sure if you put a link to how your getting ripped off by high equipment prices or asking another id question for an aptasia all would be good and we can learn so much more about the hobby and all expand our knowledge

Spot on.

LOL at the aiptasia and equipment posts.

No, I'm not even allowed to start threads in the general discussions section. Apparantley he got a complaint from a member who said "ross is posting environmental stuff again" . How this member knew that I'm (supposedly) not allowed to post envro threads anymore I dont know? Because this is the first time I have mentioned anything related to this on any board. Deleting a thread that received 1 complaint, but which had 7 people takinng part in, seems wrong to me. I feel these complainers need to get a life. If they don't like it, ignore it, surely?

Perhaps they would like to setup a section for 'enviromental issues and discussions' instead then?

Some of the mods on you-are do seem to be complete door handles at times
