Hi, i do appoligise if this has already been covered, i did have a look through but couldnt see. I have a 200 litre tank which will consist of live rock bringing the volume to aprox 170 litre. I have been thinking of getting a v2 200, but have been told to get a v2 400 instead, but have also been told by another source that the 200 will be fine and 400 could be too much for the tank. Any advise? Hope you can help, thanks.

hi,
i'd always go bigger with a skimmer, then just go a little bigger :D they actually work better the bigger you go, you get more air, more contact time and more skimate, so better water quality.

The v2 400 will absolutely not be too big, you cannot overskim a tank. I would almost go so far as to suggest why not look for a v2 600 of equivalent deltec. Keep an eye I'm the used goods sections of forums and eBay to see what you can pick up, bigger is always better, even a v2 1000 wouldn't be as daft as it sounds, particularly if you like fish and sps.

ok thanks for that, its alot of help. Just wondering if you know the size of these roughly? i have external filter, so am i right in thinking it will need to hang off the back of the tank? Just trying to guage how far forward i will have to bring the tank as its currently pretty close to the wall. cheers

That's going to be your biggest limiting factor. Have you considered adding a sump?

Hi,
as a hang on the Deltec mce600 did me proud on 105 lite nano with very heavy stock, and it kept up on the 450 litre upgrade for the first few months while i saved up for a bigger one. A sump certainly gives more choice of skimmer though

No i dont think a sump is a option as pretty limited by the cabinet, ill just stick with the external pump and push the tank forward, cheers again.

If I had the choice I would buy a second hand deltec mc500 (internal) or mce 600 (hang on) for £100 than a new V2 range skimmer and then have to replace the pump.
Most of these skimmers would need a 10-15 cm clearance on the back.

For an MCE600 you would need about 90mm down the back or side!

Yeah i also think the mce 600 would be a much better idea, having a v2 would mean a lrg pump in the tank and as said you would need a 600 and up so the tank would need to come a fair way forward and as said above the pump is pants so would need changing.

Thanks for the advice guys, gonna go for a deltec 600 i think. I have been told they are pretty noisy in operation and that there is a sound proofing kit available?
