This may seem like a stupid question (although my dad once told me,the only stupid question is the one you already know the answer to)
Im about to fit a sump/refugium and I want to use 40mm flexable hose from the overflow box to the sump to cut down on joints (leaks).
Is there anything I should look for or avoid when buying ?.
Cheers

get some clear pvc hose from your local hardware shop, but dont get the thin walled stuff as it collapses to easily when bent.

As above or you could go to your nearest pond shop and get some black flexy pipe

You need to be careful with the black pipe shown as it tends to go brittle quite quickly with salt water. It works fine until you start moving it around then it can split

Also you may be better using the special connection clips to fasten it onto your rigid pipework as,again, it can be a week point once the pipework goes brittle

Thanks for the heads up on this stuff.I will by twice what I need so I can replace it if/when it splits.

I've used the pond hose a lot and Martin (cass1) is right about how it can go brittle. Recently when I re-did my sump I found a slightly different brand that can be identified with a 'white' spiral inner, this is much more flexible than the other stuff and I'm hoping there will be less chance of it breaking down, although that has never happened to me so far!

You can solvent weld it to regular solvent weld pipework to make a secure fitting, and a little bit of heat it can be removed in the future.

These are the i/d sizes it is commonly available in...

20mm - 3/4"
25mm - 1"
32mm - 1.25"
38mm - 1.5"
40mm - 1.75"

Here are some other plumbing notes I keep to hand that might come in handy...

43mm ABS Pipe ID: 1 1/2" 37mm
OD: 1 11/16" 43mm

43mm ABS Fitting ID: 1 11/16" 43mm
OD: 47mm

32mm ABS Fitting OD: 41mm

40mm pond pipe goes over a 32mm ABS & VDL fitting
40mm pond pipe goes over 40mm VDL pipe (with no heat)
40mm pond pipe barely stretches over 43mm ABS pipe

32mm ABS fitting goes into 43mm bulkhead threaded side
40mm VDL will NOT fit 43mm bulkhead threaded side

32mm VDL pipe goes into 32mm ABS pipe

40mm VDL pipe goes into 43mm ABS pipe with some heat

40mm VDL/43mmABS joins with 43mm ABS compression fitting
43mm compression fitting fits 32mm fitting

Notes.
VDL = the grey stuff from the likes of coral culture
ABS = the white B&Q solvent weld Marley stuff
What we 'casually' term 40mm Marley pipework actually has an external diameter of 43mm

And don't forget to post some photos!

If you need silicone, get it from Warriors in tuckingmill, down the hill from Trimar, large cartridge for less than a fiver.

i use the black flexi with white core inner for all my pipework - seems absolutely fine so far. and there are dozens of fittings made for it too - push on, threaded, taps, T pieces, reducers, etc. Good prices too - i have 3 or 4 ball valves for the 32mm and they were all under a £5

£3.75 per tube.

There is a Warriors in Redruth as well (Cardrew Industrial Estate), not far from Jason's.

Thanks again for all the info.
I have cut and pasted alot of it for future reference.
Iv made the sump this evening but I wont be putting any pics up.
The sump is very small because the cabinate is devided in two and the devider takes allot of the tanks weight.
Iv made it strong not pretty with 6mm glass and a ton of silicone sealant.
Its only 30cm wide 35cm deep and 50cm high (made high in case of problems).
Some how Iv got to get an mce600 skimmer,400w heater,1500 ltr/h pump, live rock and algea in it :) oh and a 24w t5
Its less than ideal but better than nothing.
Cheers
