Hi, is there anything you can get which will double up as a heater and a chiller which you can jus set a fixed temp and it will control it for you? Im in uk and too hot is not normally a issue but its been really hot the last few days, the tank is getting up to 36 0c. If there is no such thing what is a decent chiller to go for? The tank is 200 litres and chilling will probably only be required about 2 weeks a year!

if you only need to chill for a short time then just put some fans above the tank. its surprising how much difference they can make. downside is your evaporation goes up but thats a small price to pay, rather than an expensive chiller.

I'm certain some chillers will also heat, but couldn't tell you which.

I thought about buying a chiller, but as we only get a few odd days of raised temperatures I devised my own way of chilling.
I used an old salt bucket and coiled a long section of 12/16mm tubing into the bucket around the inner edge from top to bottom, fit a small volume pump to one end, (you need a slow flow as the water in the pipe needs to be in contact with the ice water as long as possible) which would be in the sump and return goes to the return end of the sump, half fill the bucket with cold tap water and I keep 2ltr icecream cartons of ice (large ice cubes) in the freezer, which I use as and when to add to the cold water in the bucket when the temp starts to rise. It's a bit Heath Robinson but it works for me and it's a darn site cheeper than a chiller.

My Hi-tech, very expensive method, is a plastic bottle of water that i stick in the freezer. Once frozen, it just sits in the sump. Takes the edge off the heat and is a lot cheaper than buying all the fish ice creams.
