to be honest john you wont be saving much , if anything, by building your own. glass is quite expensive and you wont get it at the same price as the tank builders.

plus its not easy on your own and not easy to get the silicone nice and neat.

And then there's the peace of mind aspect ,,what will the wife say if the tank sprang a leak ,you wont have anyone to come back at apart from yourself.

However if your thinking of building a tank and its no an issue of cost but a want to do project then go for it m8

Silicone you can get from warriors and it is a good quality one however i like the black silicone myself but not to sure where to buy local so maybe look online

If you do go for it John don't forget the update pics :)

I have built tanks before, and when I came to replace my last tank it was something like £20 more expensive to get it built and delivered with a warranty rather than buy the glass and build it myself. If you do the weir work and drilling yourself, then that can save a few pounds.

Hi mate, have a look at AC Aquatics for a quote. I was looking to upgrade :) (If she allows) the quote a got for a 40Lx24Hx30W without drilling and weir which came in at £205 plus £55 delivery.

I have replaced the front glass which wasn't too bad, but like others have said there isn't much saving.
I work in the glazing industry and can buy glass at cost, for a 54 x 24 piece in 10mm with polished edges still cost me £40
For my new 6 footer I shall use AC, have heard good things about them

I built my last one, have a look in my tank thread, the main reason was i could not fit it in the spot i wanted it prebuilt, it did also work out cheaper for me
