Sand in sump

the sand in my sump has started to turn black, is this normal or should i think about getting it out? Ive never experienced this before, should i be worried?

Hmmm not sure, but black doesn't sound good to me

The black stuff is where the sand has turned anoxic. Its not good but as long as it is only a bit it wont cause any problems. I take it it is a DSB? I've run DSB's for years and never got them to run well long term. I think they need to be turned over A LOT by critters to work properly.... and we rarely run them with enough critters.
