What are you doing flow wise?
Are you putting in a surge bucket or just using powerheads?
I was toying with a surge bucket but still not decided yet.

gray
Mar 28 2009, 07:03 PM

update
tank was delivered at 6.30 am tuesday morning and lifted into its final home alot easier than i imagined
spent the rest of the week fixing return pipes and feed pipes, plumbed in two reactors ( phosphate and carbon ) off main return pump using a laguna 7500 pump through 32mm returns
tank has twin weirs one on each end panel 40mm pipes
have started to fix light 2x 400 watt and sort electrics
started to fill with ro last night , 4" in 24 hrs at this rate will take to friday to fill just the main tank
just can't decide weather to paint back and sides black or blue

looks good mate, get some plywood cut to size and do black one side and blue the other that way you get the best of both worlds and can change around if needed as painting the tank is ok but if you dont like it then it would be a pain to change

Very nice looking setup gray

, the only trouble with painting something to put up to the glass is that if its not touching all the surface of the glass you get a reflection off the glass in those areas and also if any water gets in between the two surface's it then makes it look patchy, then you've got to keep taking it off to wipe it down, been there, done it, and wouldn't do it again.
bomber has a point about the paint, however, it would be handy to remove it so you could check behind the rockwork now and then. maybe try tillys idea first and if it does look annoying then paint it.
set up is looking great. im always jealous of people with a sump room, lol.

Hi Gray.
Looking really nice
Not sure if you have sorted out your flow and whether you were going for a surge bucket. If it helps i have 3 spare ones which I've just taken off. I've changed over to Ocean Motion and revs which has made hellava difference.
I have 3x 30 gal ones that just need to be re-plumbed. Your welcome to borrow one and try it for a day or 2 if you want.
I had 2 different systems on the go. 3 flapper valve ones (same principal as the toilet cystern, same as Jas has) and 1 syphon one which has no moving parts but wasnt as good.
If your interested give us a shout. I'm just over from Jas's at Scorrier and am off all week.
Cheers

looking very good and what it shows from those photos is how good it would look in black!!
Your going to spend over 50% of your time enjoying the tank behind it! don't paint it it will make it really boring doing maintenance. If you can just keep everything dark behind could you get away without a painted board also. Just an opaque black curtain or something?

Blue is a great colour for the back and sides, adds a blueish tinge to everything without having Actinics.

Hi Gray.
Theres not much to know really. Jas and Lynds got me into them. Instead of using their fish tank idea,I got some 30 gal black tanks and installed the flapper valves. It was a bit finicky to get them running right. i had 4 of them. each one plumbed into 32mm pipes and heading into the main tank through gravity. As i'm sure you know from Jasons tank, they certainly send the current through.
Not sure what you need to know or whether this is the place to bore you with the ins and outs. lol
Its a valve that has a pipe attached to the bottom of it and sits shut. As you pump water into your bucket the top end of the flapper valve has a ballcock tied to it. the water eventually pulls the ball upwards and releases the valve. This then lets the water gush out. As the water level then drops the ball also comes down and lets the valve shut again. this then allows the tank to refill....easy My apologies to reefyman and any other plumbers out there lol
Its quite fascinating to watch and has the desired effect of seeing the corals "sway" in the current, especially if you can fit a couple of them.I wanted them to provide all my circulation within in the tank... which they mostly did. But then i saw Ocean Motions and realised this was in a different league... hth
Pop over if you like and see what you think.

The only problem with surge buckets is if you are using an ATO for evaporation, the water level in the sump goes up and down and will play havoc with the float switches.
